Early coverage of Katrina’s flooding vilified Black and Latinx survivors, and even years after the disaster, these poor and non-white residents of New Orleans and the Gulf were less likely than wealthier and whiter residents to be able to return. These observations helped make Katrina a turning point for discussions about race and class in America. Now, 20 years later, with diversity under attack, what have we learned?
